Finding
the
right
whitening
toothpaste
for
you
can
be
difficult,
particularly
if
you
have
sensitive
teeth.
While
there
are
plenty
of
options
on
the
market,
HuffPost
readers
have
recently
flocked
to
Mouthology’s
10%
nano
hydroxyapatite
toothpaste,
which
became
one
of
the
most
popular
Amazon
products
we
covered
last
month.
We
were
curious
to
find
out
if
the
hype
is
real
—
so
we
asked
a
dentist.
“The
10%
nano-hydroxyapatite
is
the
main
ingredient
that
stands
out
for
enamel
care,”
Dr.
Michael
J.
Wei,
a
dentist
specializing
in
general,
cosmetic
and
restorative
dentistry
at
Manhattan
Cosmetic
Dentist,
told
HuffPost
when
we
asked
him
to
take
a
look
at
the
Mouthology
toothpaste’s
formula.
He
added,
“It’s
also
fluoride-
and
SLS-free,
so
it
may
appeal
to
people
who
prefer
a
simpler
formula.”
(Many
reviewers
have
noted
that
this
toothpaste
doesn’t
foam
up
like
many
other
formulas
that
contain
SLS,
which
is
a
foaming
agent.)
Dentists
have
named
fluoride
as
the
most
important
ingredient
to
look
for
in
a
toothpaste
in
previous
HuffPost
coverage,
but
other
dentists
have
also
recommended
nano
hydroxyapatite,
a
calcium-based
compound
lauded
for
its
remineralizing
effects,
to
HuffPost
for
people
with
sensitive
teeth
in
particular.
So
while
you
should
be
skeptical
of
recent
fearmongering
about
fluoride,
as
it’s
still
widely
recommended
and
considered
safe,
nano
hydroxyapatite
could
still
be
right
for
you.
According
to
Wei,
either
ingredient
can
be
part
of
a
healthy
oral
care
routine.
“Fluoride
helps
strengthen
enamel
by
supporting
the
formation
of
fluorapatite,
which
is
more
resistant
to
acid,”
he
said.
“Nano
hydroxyapatite
works
a
little
differently
by
supplying
a
mineral
that
is
very
similar
to
the
mineral
naturally
found
in
your
teeth.
Both
can
play
a
role
in
maintaining
strong,
healthy
enamel.”
Amazon
Mouthology
toothpaste
contains
10%
nano
hydroxyapatite,
as
well
as
xylitol.
In
the
case
of
the
Mouthology
toothpaste,
that’s
a
10%
concentration
of
nano
hydroxyapatite,
which
the
brand
claims
is
the
optimal
amount,
citing
scientific
research.
“There
is
research
behind
using
10%
nano
hydroxyapatite,
but
I
wouldn’t
say
that
10%
is
necessarily
the
ideal
concentration
for
everyone,”
Wei
said.
“The
overall
formulation
and
a
person’s
individual
dental
needs
matter
too.”
As
with
any
oral
hygiene
product,
you
should
consult
with
your
dentist
first.
Another
important
ingredient
in
the
Mouthology
toothpaste
is
xylitol,
which
experts
have
previously
told
HuffPost
can
lower
your
cavity
risk.
“Xylitol
is
a
naturally
occurring
sugar
alcohol
found
in
certain
plants
and
fruits,”
Wei
explained.
“It
can
help
reduce
cavity-causing
bacteria
and
increase
saliva
production,
which
helps
protect
the
teeth
and
keep
the
mouth
hydrated.”
While
our
previous
coverage
focused
on
chewing
xylitol
gum,
incorporating
it
into
a
toothpaste
can
make
your
oral
care
routine
one
step
easier.
The
toothpaste
comes
in
a
wide
range
of
fruit,
mint
and
cinnamon
flavors,
as
well
as
an
unflavored
version
and
a
version
for
folks
with
extra
sensitive
teeth.
It’s
also
made
in
the
United
States.
Reviewers
call
the
toothpaste
a
“miracle
in
a
bottle,”
with
one
writing,
“Now
I
have
been
using
it
for
3
weeks
and
it
is
great.
My
teeth
no
longer
hurt,
they
feel
so
much
stronger,
I
can
drink
cold
and
hot
drinks
again,
and
no
sores
in
my
mouth
like
I
was
getting
with
Crest.”
Another
noticed
their
teeth
looking
“noticeably
cleaner
[and]
whiter”
after
just
about
a
week
of
consistent

“I
was
struggling
with
teeth
sensitivity…like
drinking
cold

hot
drinks
and
I’m
someone
who
has
used
all
the
popular
“sensitive

(sensodyne,
Colgate,

mainstream
toothpastes
and
it
never
got
better.
I

“I
wasn’t
expecting
to
get
emotionally
attached
to
a
mouth-cleaning
product,
but
here
we
are.
It
actually
tastes
good,
leaves
my
mouth
feeling
fresh,
and
makes
my
teeth
feel
noticeably
cleaner.
No
weird
aftertaste,
no
feeling
like
I
just
rinsed
with
floor
cleaner,
and
no
immediate
need
to
drink
something
afterward.
My
mouth
feels
so
clean
after
using
it
that
I
briefly
consider
becoming
a
person
who
flosses
every
day.
Briefly.
Definitely
a
winner!”

I
had
a
lot
of
chipping
and
weakness
of
my
teeth
during
pregnancy

nursing
with
my
kids
and
now
menopause.
I
am
on
my

my

have
never
felt
better
and
stronger.
I
rave
about
this

to
everyone.”

“Love
the
subtle
minty
taste,
the
no
foam
formula,
the
whitening
properties
of
this
toothpaste
and
the
enamel
restoration
which
is
NOT
hype.
I
have
older
dental
work
that
was
becoming
noticeable.
A
few
weeks
of
using
this
toothpaste
day
and
night
is
reversing
the
state
of
my
caps
and
crowns
so
that
they
are
looking
newer,
fresher.
Teeth
are
smooth
and
whitened.
Breath
is
fresher,
gums
look
healthier.
No
more

burning,
mouth

or
gum
irritation.
Best
thing
we’ve

switching

Highly

“l’ve
been
using
this
toothpaste
for
about
a
week
now.
My
teeth
definitely
feel
much
cleaner
than
with
any
other
product
l’ve
used.
l
also
see
some
definite
whitening.
My
teeth
were
quite
yellow,
probably
due
to
the
black
coffee
l
drink.
But
l’m
noticing
that
is
improving-
more
so
than
with
any
of
the
whitening
toothpastes
l’ve
tried.
So
I’m
thinking
l
will
be
reordering
this
and
see
how
much
of
a
change
l
observe
over
time.
So
far
though,
l
am
impressed.
The
tube
is
not
very
big,
so
l
doubt
it
will
last
a
month,
but
if
it
continues
to
impress,
l
will
gladly
stick
with
the
product.”

TheraBreath’s

If

“After
just
one
use,
I’m

I

with
how
white
my
teeth
are
now.”
This
two-step
whitening
system
works
in
tandem
to
give
you
a
brighter
smile.
For
the
first
step,
you
brush
with
the
4-ounce
deep-clean
toothpaste
tube
for
about
a
minute,
then
spit.
Instead
of
rinsing
your
mouth
with
water
after
step
one,
you
instead
start
brushing
with
the
2.3-ounce
whitening
gel
for
step
two.
Then,
spit
and
rinse
like
normal.
It’s
fuss-free
compared
to
having
to
take
out
Crest
whitening
strips,
carefully
place
them
on
your

and
wait
up
to
30
minutes

This
